E.coli in animal droppings found at outbreak farm

TESTS confirmed that the E.coli bug was present in animal droppings from the farm at the centre of the current outbreak. The Veterinary Laboratories Agency collected samples of animal faeces from Godstone Farm in Surrey on 7 September, and 33 of 102 contained the bug. Positive samples came from ewes, lambs, pigs, goats, cattle, ponies and rabbits. Eleven of those samples contained E.coli which was "indistinguishable" from the bug which infected visitors.
E coli cases linked to petting farm rise to 64

THE number of people who have contracted E coli in an outbreak linked to a children's farm has risen to 64, the Health Protection Agency said yesterday. The number went up on the 57 cases reported on Saturday as experts reiterated calls for a review into the health and safety guidelines relating to petting farms. There are fears that tens of thousands of children could have been exposed to the infection since it was first identified in August.
Eight more cases of farm E.coli

Eight more cases of E.coli are being linked to a petting farm in Surrey. The number of people affected by the O157 strain of the illness connected to Godstone Farm now stands at 57. Ten children are in hospital, five of whom are being treated in London, although all are described as improving and none is seriously ill. Godstone Farm closed last Saturday and its sister farm, Horton Park Children's Farm in Epsom, is also shut because of "unsatisfactory" hygiene arrangements.
Farm petting guidance 'unchanged'

Official guidance on whether children should have contact with animals at petting farms remains the same, despite a microbiologist's calls for a ban. The Department of Health said touching was fine if good hand hygiene followed, but has ordered a review of guidelines. Prof Hugh Pennington said under-fives should not handle animals because of the risk they might infect themselves. Two petting farms in Surrey, one in Nottinghamshire and one in Devon have shut attractions owing to E.coli fears.
E coli 'link' shuts a fourth farm

A FOURTH farm attraction was closed last night after the Health Protection Agency (HPA) found a potential link with three E coli sufferers. World of Country Life farm, in Exmouth, Devon, was shut after the agency said it was "acting on information that potentially linked the farm with three individuals with confirmed E coli". An HPA spokesman said: "There are many potential sources of E coli and as yet there is no confirmation that the farm is the source of infection."

East Devon District Council and the Health Protection Agency this afternoon advised the precautionary closure of the World of Country Life farm, Exmouth, acting on information that potentially linked the farm with three individuals with confirmed E. coli O157 infection.

The Health Protection Agency this morning advised the closure of White Post Farm in Nottinghamshire, following confirmation yesterday that a second individual who visited this farm had the same strain of E. coli O157 as another visitor.

FIVE more people have contracted E coli in the outbreak linked to a children's farm, it was confirmed last night. Of the 45 people affected, 12 are children being treated in hospital. Four are seriously ill. Six children are in a stable condition, and the Health Protection Agency (HPA) described two as "improving". Godstone Farm in Surrey was closed to the public last Saturday in light of the outbreak. Horton Park Children's Farm in Epsom, Surrey, its sister farm, has also shut.
Children hit by farm E coli outbreak rises to 14

FOURTEEN children are now being treated in hospital after an E coli outbreak at a petting farm, it has been revealed. The total number of cases linked to the outbreak has risen from 37 to 40, said the Health Protection Agency. Four children are seriously ill, seven are stable and three are improving. The figure comes after the head of the HPA personally apologised to the parents of children left seriously ill by the outbreak at Godstone Farm in Surrey.
