'Bleach bath' benefit for eczema

(BBC 27/04/2009)

Adding bleach to the bath may be an effective treatment for chronic eczema, US researchers say. In a study of 31 children, there was significant improvement in eczema in those who had diluted bleach baths compared with normal baths. The Pediatrics study also showed improvements were only on parts of the body submerged in the bath. UK experts stressed the treatment could be extremely dangerous and should only be done under the care of a specialist.

Mouse gene aids allergy research

(BBC 06/04/2009)

A genetic defect discovered in mice could help scientists find out what is responsible for the large increase in allergic diseases seen in recent years. Researchers said the defect in mice leads to allergic inflammation, comparable to that seen in human eczema. They believe it confirms the importance of the filaggrin gene, which helps skin produce a protective barrier. The barrier stops allergens which lead to eczema and asthma entering the body.

Water softener eczema relief hope

(BBC 11/01/2009)

Eczema has been reported to be more common in hard-water areas but it is not understood why that might be.

'Friendly bacteria' could slash baby's odds of developing eczema, new study shows

(Daily Mail 27/09/2008)

Mothers who took a probiotic supplement [actobacillus rhamnosus] in the last month of pregnancy and in the first few months of breastfeeding had babies who were half as likely to develop eczema. When they were tested at age two, those exposed to the probiotic were half as likely to have developed eczema as those exposed to dummy powders.

Early fish 'reduces eczema risk'

(BBC 25/09/2008)

Adding fish to a child's diet before the age of nine months could lessen the chances of developing eczema. Swedish scientists tracked the health of children in 5,000 families, and said that early introduction of fish cut the risk by a quarter. The research was published in Archives of Disease in Childhood.

One-a-day pill could end eczema misery for 100,000 sufferers

(Daily Mail 15/09/2008)

Hand eczema, which causes inflamed cracks in the skin, affects 250,000 Britons. For many sufferers conventional steroid creams have no effect. But the vitamin A-based drug Toctino cleared the problem in almost half of adults treated in a six-month trial.

Spring water could 'help treat eczema when applied directly to the skin'

(Daily Mail 08/09/2008)

Thermal spring water could help treat eczema when applied directly to the skin, a study has found. Doctors have discovered that 'harmless' bacteria found in the water can relieve itching and improve the appearance of skin.
