ACTRESS Liz Dawn's love of a good cackle was something she always had in common with the legendary Vera Duckworth, the Coronation Street character she played for 34 years until emphysema forced her to retire. It is thanks to the treatment she has received at a pioneering lung disease clinic and research centre in south Manchester that she can still cackle and walk three times as far as she was able to when she finally left the show two years ago.

Julie, now 49, blamed her problems on the 20-a-day smoking habit she'd had since her teens. However, as she continued to be dogged by chest infections and the attacks became worse she was sent by her GP for tests. They revealed she was suffering from Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, a rare genetic condition. It meant every puff on a cigarette put her at much greater risk than other smokers. It caused her to develop emphysema, a form of lung disease which normally affects much older people.
