Babies crippled as midwives bungle births

(Daily Mail 02/03/2009)

The birth of a first baby should be a moment of delirious triumph, but for Penelope Searle it was the continuation of a nightmare that began in labour and is still going on more than a year later. Her son Casper was wrenched from her body in such a way that the nerve supply to his right arm was irreparably damaged - five of the eight principle nerves operating the arm were destroyed. Now, aged 13 months, he cries in frustration at being unable to haul himself to a standing position. Unlike other babies his age, he can't grasp a cup, pick up a large toy or climb on to play equipment.
