Measles update for 17 August 2009

There are no new cases of measles in Wales. The outbreak is affecting 20 of the 22 counties of Wales. The total number of cases is 375. There are 268 cases in Mid and West Wales, 61 in North Wales and 46 in South East Wales.
Measles vaccine to be tested in India

A NEW needle-free measles vaccine with the potential to save thousands of children's lives is soon to be tested on patients. Clinical trials of the dry powder are due to begin next year in India, where measles kills almost 200,000 infants annually.
Measles outbreak declared in Merthyr Tydfil

Twelve cases of measles have recently been reported on the Gellideg estate. Other suspected cases are currently being investigated. None of the cases has received immunisation with the MMR vaccine, and the NPHS is urging local parents whose children are not vaccinated against measles - which can prove fatal - by taking action immediately. The outbreak comes as the number of cases of measles across Wales continues to grow, with 371 cases of measles in 20 Welsh counties reported as of 30 July.

There is one new case of measles in Wales. The new case is in Denbighshire. The outbreak is affecting 20 of the 22 counties of Wales. The total number of cases is now 356. There are 266 cases in Mid and West Wales, 60 in North Wales and 30 in South East Wales.

The total number of cases remains at 349. There are 265 cases in Mid and West Wales, 59 in North Wales and 25 in South East Wales.

Five additional cases of measles have been reported in Wales. There are three new cases in Pembrokeshire, one in Carmarthenshire and one in Powys. The outbreak is affecting 16 of the 22 counties of Wales. The total number of cases is now 313. There are 239 cases in Mid and West Wales, 58 in North Wales and 16 in South East Wales.

Spread and extent of the outbreak (information as at 5pm on 11 June) 3 additional cases of measles have been reported in Wales. There is one new case in Wrexham and two in Swansea. The outbreak is affecting 16 of the 22 counties of Wales. The total number of cases is now 296. There are 223 cases in Mid and West Wales, 58 in North Wales and 15 in South East Wales.
