Divorce 'health scars permanent'
(BBC 28/07/2009)
Divorce has a lingering, detrimental impact on health that even remarriage cannot fully repair, a study suggests. A Chicago study involving 8,652 people aged 51 to 61 found divorced people have 20% more chronic illnesses such as cancer than those who never marry. The figure only drops to 12% for those who remarry, researchers write in the Journal of Health and Social Behaviour. They say we start adulthood with a "health stock" that is kept or eroded depending on our marital experience.
Strained marriages take a toll on women's - but not men's - physical health
(BBC 05/03/2009)
Women are more likely than men to suffer damage to their health from being in a strained marriage, research suggests. US psychologists found wives in tense marriages were prone to risk factors for heart disease, stroke and diabetes. In comparison, husbands seemed relatively immune from such problems. Details of the study, based on 276 couples who had been married for an average of 20 years were presented to the American Psychosomatic Society.
Rowan Pelling's sex advice column: 'Since we got married my husband doesn't make love to me'
(Daily Mail 01/03/2009)
QUESTION: I got married last year and though we had a fairytale wedding and a fulfilling sex life before, my husband now does not want to have sex with me. He has recently sold his business and, though we are financially secure, I do think he may be going through a bit of a crisis of confidence. She adores my wife and treats her like the daughter she never had. She also wants grandchildren ...

Virginia Ironside's Dilemmas: My husband is a do-gooder
(The Independent 03/11/2008)
Dear Virginia, I am married to a do-gooder. He retired at 50 and is always out visiting lonely old people, or putting himself forward for local committees. The final straw was when he told me that he's going to become a councillor. I'm not a clingy wife, but it bothers me that we haven't spoken one-to-one for a fortnight. I feel we may as well not be married. I want to ask him to give something up - would that be selfish? Yours sincerely, Pippa
Life Support: How to have a good break-up
(The Independent 06/10/2008)
So, the deed is done and the world is topsy-turvy. Take a long break before you speak to your ex again. Three weeks is the absolute minimum time you need to gather your thoughts and emotions. (Ideally you won't speak to them again until you're married, to someone else, with two children. But that might be impractical.)
