Pollution may increase risk of miscarriage
(The Scotsman 23/10/2009)
HIGH levels of pollution could increase the risk of miscarriage, new research suggests. Experts who studied the effects of diesel exhaust particles found a link between exposure and failed pregnancies. While the study was carried out in Brazil, researchers believe the same effect could be seen in other cities worldwide. The UK Government estimates that air pollution contributes to between 12,000 and 24,000 premature deaths in the country each year.

Miscarriage: The loneliest grief of all
(The Independent 27/01/2009)
The doctor's silence tells me everything I need to know. Eventually, he clears his throat, and says in a voice deliberately gentled, "I'm very sorry". And so am I. There on the screen before us, I can make out the form of a tiny curled foetus and, where a few weeks earlier its heart was thumping with life, it now lies still in the cavernous vacancy of my womb.

The great news I thought I would never deliver, by TV newsreader Kate Gerbeau
(Daily Mail 15/11/2008)
"I held my baby daughter in my arms for the first time on November 1. After an eight-hour labour, some might think I'd had it easy. But we've waited three long years for Chloe - three years of excitement, hope, disappointment and despair. If you look at the statistics, one in four pregnancies ends in miscarriage. But Chloe is the result of my fourth and only successful pregnancy."
Overweight women 'more likely to miscarry healthy babies'
(Daily Mail 13/11/2008)
Research, led by Dr Inna Landres from Stanford University in California, showed that women whose body mass index (BMI) was greater than 25 were more likely to lose healthy babies in early pregnancy. A BMI of 18 to 24.9 is considered normal while above 25 is overweight and over 30 is obese. The team studied DNA from foetuses that were miscarried in the first eight weeks of pregnancy among 204 women.

The authors said these women should be monitored as well as those who have recurrent miscarriages.
