'I felt shocked. What if I was bringing the virus to Britain?'

(The Independent 27/04/2009)

On Saturday afternoon I switched on the television over lunch and caught the news of the swine flu virus. Suddenly the runny nose and sore throat which I had picked up in Mexico and put down to jet lag and too much partying mutated into feelings of paranoia and guilt. What if I had brought the infection from Mexico to London? What for the elderly or young people that I'd come into contact with since then who might be at risk?

Stay at home Britons sought medical advice online

(Patient UK 09/01/2009)

As cold and flu viruses spread across Britain over Christmas, the Internet became a place for the ailing to learn about their symptoms. The GP authored website Patient UK (one of the top UK health sites) received a 295% increase for searches on 'flu-like illness' and a 93% rise in people looking for information about the respiratory infection antibiotic, Amoxicillin.

Bosses slam 'throw a sickie' ad

(BBC 07/01/2009)

The TV and web "Take a Benylin Day" ad offers advice on what to tell the boss when calling in sick and reviews the best DVDs to watch while at home. The Federation of Small Businesses said the adverts were "outrageous". The advertising company behind the campaign, JWT, said it had taken the advice of experts that taking a day off sick could help recovery from illness.

TV advert for cold remedy Benylin urges you 'to throw a sickie'... while website tells you how

(Daily Mail 06/01/2009)

Bosses are furious over a TV commercial which suggests those with viral symptoms should 'take a Benylin day' in bed, rather than struggle into the office. The Federation of Small Businesses has referred the commercial to the advertising watchdog. They also complained about an associated website, which includes tips on how to call in sick.

Misery makers

(BBC 23/12/2008)

It is the time of year when coughs, colds and flu seem to spread like wildfire. One person in the office gets sick and it is not long before half the workforce has taken to their bed. And all those Christmas parties probably aggravate the situation as we mix with more people than we usually would.
