(BBC 06/11/2009)
Televised footage of medics dealing with the aftermath of the attack which left five servicemen dead in Afghanistan brought the harsh realities of war into viewers' living rooms. Guardsman Jimmy Major, Warrant Officer first class Darren Chant, Sgt Matthew Telford, Cpl Steven Boote and Cpl Nicholas Webster-Smith were shot on Tuesday. Eight others were injured. For the bloodshed to have been caused by a man they were helping to train - a "rogue" Afghan police recruit - was rare.

More than 200 NHS staff are being put through their final training in the UK before being deployed to Afghanistan. Most are from the Territorial Army's 256 Field Hospital, which draws volunteers from London and south-east England. For the next two days they will be based in a giant warehouse outside York, that has been adapted to create the conditions they will encounter at Camp Bastion in Helmand.

(The Scotsman 22/08/2009)
A NEUROSURGEON who has saved countless lives in Afghanistan is among six Scottish nominees on the shortlist for the Military and Civilian Health Partnership Awards. Across the UK, 24 teams, individuals and projects have made the shortlist across eight categories, recognising those who care for Britain's armed forces and veterans. Wing Commander Philip Barlow, a Glasgow consultant neurosurgeon who has saved civilian and military lives in Kosovo and Afghanistan, is among those up for the awards.

For six weeks, surgeon Lieutenant Colonel Nigel Tai was on call 24 hours a day, treating wounded and dying British troops in Afghanistan on some of the bloodiest days the country has seen. In that time, more than 100 British servicemen and women were wounded in action, some from gunshot wounds, others blown apart by roadside bombs. The most critical of those were seen, alongside Afghan civilians and insurgents, at Camp Bastion hospital in Helmand province by 41-year-old Lt Col Tai and his team.
Military doctor shortage warning
(BBC 17/07/2009)
The military's medical arm is under severe strain because of a huge shortage of doctors, unions say. A third of the 768 doctor posts in the armed forces are currently unfilled with the worst shortages in some of the most critical areas like anaesthetics. The British Medical Association said the problem meant doctors were risking burn-out because they were having to return to the front-line too quickly. The government said it was trying to rectify the shortfall.
Mental health fears over veterans
(BBC 05/05/2009)
No accurate figures are kept on the number of ex-service personnel treated for mental health problems, a BBC Radio Newcastle investigation has found. It was discovered that the Ministry of Defence does not monitor veterans once they leave, nor does the NHS routinely ask if people have been in the forces. There are fears this could lead to them not getting psychological care. Veterans' Minister Kevan Jones said he was looking at ways they could be tracked through the NHS system.
Minister: 'NHS is failing veterans'
(The Scotsman 14/04/2009)
A DEFENCE minister berated senior colleagues at the Department of Health for failing to provide services to armed forces veterans, it emerged yesterday. The dispute flared after veterans minister Kevan Jones attacked health ministers for not doing enough for troops suffering traumas caused by combat.
UK medics giving frontline help
(BBC 23/02/2009)
A team of medics and nurses who usually treat injured soldiers flown back to the UK are in Afghanistan helping to save the lives of frontline troops. Five from the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine in Birmingham are at a field hospital at Camp Bastion, the UK's main military base in Helmand province. Leading Naval Nurse Sarah Butler said she wanted to understand what soldiers experienced...
(Telegraph 12/11/2008)
