Many 'lacking first aid skills'

(BBC 10/09/2009)

Only one in 13 people feel confident they could carry out first aid on those ill and injured, a survey suggests. The British Red Cross quizzed 2,000 people in the UK about their knowledge and ability to help in a series of emergency situations. The survey revealed that people were particularly weak when it came to CPR - chest compressions and mouth-to-mouth. The charity said the findings were worrying and urged trainers to be more creative in designing courses.

School staff medical aid pressure

(BBC 16/06/2009)

Schools are putting teaching assistants under increasing pressure to carry out medical procedures without appropriate training, a union warns. Unison says most support staff only hold a basic first aid certificate. But some are being asked to carry out procedures such as administering drugs for heart problems, changing colostomy bags and testing blood sugar levels. Government guidelines say staff must be properly trained before carrying out any medical procedure.

Call for first aid in curriculum

(BBC 07/03/2009)

First aid should be a compulsory part of the school curriculum, St John Ambulance has urged ministers. The charity carried out a survey of more than 1,500 school children, of whom seven out of 10 said they would not know how to help in an emergency. First aid is a mandatory subject for Welsh and Northern Irish pupils, but in English and Scottish schools it is an optional part of the curriculum.
