New system set to detect 'silent killer'
(The Scotsman 22/08/2009)
Rod Chalmers, a vascular consultant at the ERI, helped create the first men-only detection tool, which should identify men at risk from abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs). The system was developed purely for men because they are seven times more likely to suffer from them. All men over the age of 65 will now be offered the screening to identify the aneurysms before they rupture or other problems begin. If the vessel ruptures it can lead to massive, often fatal, blood loss.
Aneurysm screening study boost
(BBC 26/06/2009)
A programme to screen 65-year-old men in England for a potentially fatal blood vessel condition could halve deaths, analysis shows. Ten years of data from a large trial found 155 deaths from abdominal aortic aneurysms in those screened compared with 296 in those not tested. However, a Danish study also published in the British Medical Journal questioned the expense of screening. All eligible men in England will be tested for the condition by 2013.
(BBC 25/10/2008)
"The real news is that if we had an aneurysm screening programme we'd have no ruptured aneurysms because the idea is that we would find all these aneurysms before they burst and treat them before they rupture... Not all patients are suitable for keyhole surgery... the procedure could only currently be undertaken at specialist centres because of the numbers of staff and expertise needed."
