Thyroid Cancer Higher in Volcanic Areas
(World health - EU Monitor 06/11/2009)
New research suggests that living near a volcano puts people at higher risk of getting a type of thyroid cancer. It's not clear how volcanoes might be related to cancer, but researchers suspect that the toxic compounds they produce could play a role. Researchers are also unsure of why thyroid cancer rates are rising around the world. It's possibly because of better detection, but the environment is a potential factor as well, they believe.

A hospital garden transformed by former cancer patients has been given a special award to recognise their work. The garden at the Velindre Cancer Centre in Cardiff was set up for people who have to spend time in isolation after radioactive treatment. The patients themselves decided to tackle the weeds and plant flowers within a controlled access zone. The hospital's two shielded rooms are used by patients with thyroid cancer following treatment with radioactive iodine.
Balding: 'Cancer has not spread'
(BBC 21/08/2009)
BBC sports presenter Clare Balding has said she is "hugely relieved" by news that her treatment for thyroid cancer has been successful. "I received the results from my post-treatment scan and it looks as if the radioactive iodine has done its job," the 38-year-old wrote on her website. "There are no signs of the thyroid cancer having spread anywhere else so all is looking happy and rosy." The TV presenter had her thyroid gland and a cyst removed earlier this year.
Clare Balding: 'getting sympathy for my cancer is too exhausting'
(Telegraph 19/06/2009)
When Clare Balding one of the BBC's most highprofile sports presenters was told she had cancer earlier this year she was determined not to let the illness interfere with the job she adores. She was given the devastating news that a cyst in her thyroid gland was malignant just days before the Grand National in April but chose to delay the operation to remove it until after the race at Aintree.
Balding is 'positive' over cancer
(BBC 29/05/2009)
BBC sports presenter Clare Balding is feeling "positive" after receiving treatment for thyroid cancer, her publicist has said. The 38-year-old has already had two operations which have removed a cyst and her thyroid gland. Her agent Annalisa Balding said: "She is feeling so positive about this, she has not got a negative bone in her body. She feels fine." She is set to receive radioactive iodine treatment next month.
