News items on 'Patient Satisfaction'
(BBC 04/11/2009)
One of the most vital skills a doctor can learn is how to deliver difficult or bad news in a clear and sympathetic way. Ros Levenson, a lay member of the General Medical Council, explains how their training is changing to make sure that all doctors have a good bedside manner. Doctors are often there at the most crucial times in our lives such as births, deaths and occasions when close family members or friends may be ill.
GPs urged to improve care quality
(BBC 11/06/2009)
GPs are being urged to improve the quality of the patient experience by embracing new initiatives. The British Medical Association's family doctor leader, Laurence Buckman, will tell the union's GP conference that this is the "year of quality". He will cite examples of projects currently in use such as web-based prescription ordering services. The call mirrors the government push to drive up standards and marks a change from the policy rows of previous years.

The National Inpatient Survey, by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), the health and social care inspectorate, is one of the largest of its kind, covering 72,000 patients who spent at least one night in hospital in 2008.

(BBC 04/05/2009)
The mayor of a Brazilian town has provoked complaints after he installed cameras in a health centre to monitor the quality of service to the public. The cameras send images and sound from the reception and a pharmacy directly to the offices of the mayor of Foz do Iguacu and other senior officials. He said it was to improve efficiency, and he wanted to extend the scheme to 28 other sites. But some staff and residents said the project is a breach of patient privacy.
(eHealthInsider 07/04/2009)
Grassroots GPs in Northern Ireland have reported widespread concern from patients about their data being passed to research company Ipsos MORI for a patient satisfaction survey. However, the DHSSPS said that patient data was passed to a third party as part of arrangements agreed with the BMA's General Practitioner Committee for the GP Patient Survey.
New powers to rate public service
(BBC 10/03/2009)
People in England will get more online powers to rate GPs, police, childcare and councils, Gordon Brown has said. He said it was wrong that consumer websites such as Amazon and eBay had "higher standards of transparency" than those for public services. Officials liken the new approach to the Tripadvisor site, where travellers can share their thoughts on hotels.
