Surgery hope for migraine cure

A PROCEDURE used in cosmetic surgery could cure migraines permanently, surgeons have claimed. The operation, has been found to "permanently fix" the debilitating effects of a migraine, which include crippling headaches, dizziness, sensitivity to light and nausea. So far, more than 400 of the ground-breaking procedures have taken place and the surgeon in the United States who pioneered the technique says more than half the patients reported "complete elimination" of migraine symptoms.
Migraine tops excuses for 'pulling a sickie' from work

Claiming to have a migraine headache has become one of the most popular excuses for "pulling a sickie" from work, a survey suggests. The YouGov poll of 2,105 people found 15% of workers who admitted to making up illness to get a day off used migraine as their excuse. The research suggested the fact that people were faking migraines put real sufferers in a difficult position. Some said they feared they would not be believed when phoning in sick.
Brain hope for erection molecule

Scientists believe a molecule which controls blood pressure and male erections may also have a profound impact on the brain. The University of Leicester team believe nitric oxide may change the way we think and hear. They hope studying it could potentially lead to new treatments for migraine, epilepsy, Alzheimer's disease and chronic pain.
Migraines 'raise pregnancy risk'

Migraines substantially raise the risk of a stroke during pregnancy, a US study suggests. However, the British Medical Journal study stressed the overall risk remained low. It also linked the headaches to a raised risk of heart disease, blood clots and high blood pressure. The researchers, led by Wake Forest University, based their findings on an analysis of 33,956 pregnancies from 2000 to 2003.
Hot weather a migraine 'trigger'

A hot day can spell bad news for migraine sufferers, increasing their risk of an attack the next day, US research suggests. The risk went up by 7.5% for every five degree Celsius increase in temperature revealed the study of more than 7,000 patients, published in Neurology. The same applied to people who suffer from non-migraine headaches too.

Severe migraine sufferers 'more at risk of heart attack or stroke'

Scientists found that those who experienced blurred or difficult vision during the painful headaches and carried certain genes were twice as likely to have a heart attack or stroke. Around 9 million people Britain regularly suffer from migraines. Around 25% are thought to have migraine with aura, whose symptoms can include flashing lights, black spots or zig-zag patterns in front of their eyes.

Two-minute inhaler treatment may ease the misery of migraine

A new migraine treatment which uses a drug used to treat schizophrenia promises faster pain relief. The treatment consists of a new type of inhaler which fires the drug directly into the lungs in just half a second. The drug is then active in the blood within two to five minutes. Early research showed that the drug has a significant impact on migraine, with up to 80% patients getting pain relief.
