New fathers to stay overnight in maternity wards

It is one of the new measures to improve fathers' involvement in antenatal and maternity services launched by the Government's Child Health Strategy. They will also be given special advice in antenatal programmes and information on their child's health, advice already available to mothers. The Strategy says there is "strong evidence" early involvement of fathers has significant benefits.

NHS pays out '£950m in maternity damages

Campaigners have warned that the total spent by the NHS on maternity services was cut by £55m in 2006-07, while the birthrate continues to rise. It has increased by 16 per cent since 2001. The total of £947m was disclosed by the NHS Litigation Authority in answers to parliamentary questions lodged by Harry Cohen, a Labour MP.
