Problem gambling 'is on the rise'

The number of people looking for help with betting problems is up by more than 20% in a year, according to a charity dealing with gambling addicts. Nine thousand more people contacted Gamcare last year than in 2007. Adrian Scarf from the charity says more than a third of those who get in touch are aged between 18 to 25 and many are students. He said: "They gamble away their grants. They start stealing from friends or borrowing from friends.
For some, financial risk-taking may be all in the genes

Some people who take big risks on the stock market can blame their genes for their behaviour, work suggests. The US scientists say their findings might give an insight into one reason for the current economic slump. The Northwestern University team found two genes that regulate the hormones dopamine and serotonin could predict whether a person would gamble.
NHS gambling rehab opens in Soho

The first NHS clinic to treat gamblers through therapy and financial advice has been opened in Soho in the West End of London. The National Problem Gambling Clinic will be tested for a year, and has sparked interest, the Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust said. Gamblers will undergo sessions with psychiatrists, psychologists and debt management experts among others.
