Bone doctor admits his mistake in diagnosing hepatitis C
(The Scotsman 11/11/2009)
AN OSTEOPATH, who left a woman fearing she would die when he wrongly diagnosed her with hepatitis C, has admitted he made a mistake. Goran Stal, 48, told the patient she had the deadly liver condition without carrying out the proper tests, the General Osteopathic Council heard. The Swede then "harassed" her at home, making repeated phone calls and leaving voice messages over two weeks, it was claimed.
Drinking Coffee Slows Progression Of Liver Disease In Chronic Hepatitis C Sufferers, Study Suggests
(World health - EU Monitor 24/10/2009)
Patients with chronic hepatitis C and advanced liver disease who drink three or more cups of coffee per day have a 53% lower risk of liver disease progression than non-coffee drinkers according to a new study led by Neal Freedman, Ph.D., MPH, from the National Cancer Institute (NCI). The study found that patients with hepatitis C-related bridging fibrosis or cirrhosis who did not respond to standard disease treatment benefited from increased coffee intake.
Genes affect hepatitis drugs' potency
(The Scotsman 17/08/2009)
A SLIGHT difference in a person's genetic code could determine whether they respond to a gruelling round of treatment for hepatitis C infection or not, researchers said yesterday. Tests looking for that deviation could be used to help decide which patients are most likely to benefit, they said. The finding may also explain why some racial and ethnic groups fare more poorly on standard treatments than others.

(Telegraph 08/07/2009)
But behind the gilded externals of her life, Jazzy has a secret so devastating that she hasn't yet talked about it with many of her friends. When she was six, and word got out that she had hepatitis C, an infectious, blood-borne virus that attacks the liver, she says, 'People wouldn't let their children play with me, or come to our house. I'm nervous about how others will react when they know that I have a disease they associate with drug users.'

A HEALTH drive has been launched to reduce the number of people contracting hepatitis C. The new Hepatitis C Managed Care Network is a partnership between NHS Lothian and the Scottish Prison Service to coincide with World Hepatitis C Day. England and Wales have been urged to follow the lead of Scotland to help tackle a hepatitis C "time-bomb". It is estimated there may be more than 400,000 people in the UK with the virus, but only about 70,000 have been diagnosed. The Scottish Government has recently launched an action plan to help quadruple the numbers getting help.

I caught hepatitis C at birth - but now I'm cured
(Daily Mail 08/11/2008)
Six years ago, doctors told Louise Davage she might be dead before the age of 50. Like the majority of the estimated 500,000 affected in the UK, the 24-year-old from Bedfordshire was unaware she had hepatitis C. However, she's received treatment with a combination of a drug called Pegylated Interferon Alpha and Ribavirin. Treatment lasts up to 12 months.
