AT the age of 44 Carl Millard already had one artificial hip and faced the prospect of another. Years of steroid use to control a condition called vasculitis that attacks blood vessels throughout the body had killed the bone cells in his joints. As the pop-group roadie turned rugby coach prepared to go under the knife for the second time, his surgeon offered him a pioneering treatment. Two years ago Carl became the first patient in the country to have his hip saved by his own stem cells.

Each year there are 60,000 hip replacements in England and Wales. About 6,000 of these involve resurfacing both the ball and socket parts of the joint with metal, and of these about 2.5% fail - many like Susan's are for unexplained reasons. "I felt it was not right after I had it done in December 2006 as I was in a lot of pain," said Susan. "I gave it time to recover, but I still could not walk properly and needed to stay on the painkillers. Then in September 2007 I just could not walk at all.
New hip and knee replacements may wear out in just three years
