Top doctor urges better NHS links

The British Medical Association in Wales says hospital consultants and GPs need to be working closer together. A senior Welsh consultant says the way patients are referred for expert help is being "hijacked" by managers. Jonathan Osborne, a specialist at Denbighshire's Glan Clwyd hospital warned that some GPs do not know who their local consultants are any more.

Schemes which pay GPs for not sending people for hospital care are bad for patients, says the British Medical Association (BMA). Some doctors have struck deals with local health bosses to cut the number of referrals they make. However, the BMA said that all decisions should be driven by the needs of the patient. The DoH said incentive schemes should ensure people are treated in the right place.

Hospital units facing closure as patients choose more successful departments
