First DNA Tests for HPV Approved

FRIDAY, March 13 (HealthDay News) -- The first DNA test to screen for two types of human papillomavirus (HPV) that are responsible for most cases of cervical cancer in the United States has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The Cervista HPV 16/18 screens for the DNA sequences of HPV types 16 and 18 in cervical cells, the agency said in a news release.

'Baby boomers' hit by sex cancers

The arrival of the "swinging sixties" may have heralded a rise in sexually-transmitted cancers, say researchers. Rates of anal, vulval and vaginal cancers rose for "baby boomers" born in the decades after the Second World War. The culprit, said the King's College London study, is the human papillomavirus (HPV), acquired during sex.

Male circumcision 'may protect women against cervical cancer'

Reasearchers tested more than 1,200 men visiting a clinic in South Africa. They found under 15% of the circumcised men and 22% of the uncircumcised men were infected with the human papilloma virus (HPV) which is the main cause of cervical cancer and genital warts. 'This finding explains why women with circumcised partners are at a lower risk of cervical cancer than other women.'

HPV linked to 25,000 cancers in 5 years

HPV caused 25,000 cases of cancer in the U.S. between 1998 and 2003, including not only cervical cancer but also anal and mouth cancers, the CDC reported on Monday.
